Long Branch CYMK Wins Perepeliuk Award!
The youth of St. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox church recently won the Perepeliuk Trophy for being the most active local in Canada of "CYMK" (Ukrainian Orthodox Youth group). They were evaluated on their activities over the last 2 years which focused on culture, faith, development of leadership skills, raising funds, and participation in social activities including those with other youth groups.
The Perepeliuk Trophy was awarded at the 57th National Convention of the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League (USRL) held in Edmonton, Alberta on the weekend of August 11-14, 2011. The tradition of attending these conventions was started by the great-grandparents of many of our youth. At the banquet to honour the 80th anniversary of CYMK, the group
entertained the audience with their performance of three Ukrainian folk songs and also joined other youth from across Canada to sing the Divine Liturgy.

This national convention also marked the inaugural year for the Andrew Olynyk Leadership Award, which was presented to the CYMK member who demonstrated similar leadership qualities to the late Andrew Olynyk, a former member of our CYMK local and a former student of Etobicoke School of the Arts. Larysa Kowalenko was honoured to accept this well-deserved award for being a role model and also for organizing events which encouraged the development of new skills and experiences for members of our CYMK local.
