The Poklony evening service of the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete will be held at St. Demetrius on Wednesday April 2nd at 7pm. The Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete (also known as the Canon of Repentance) is a lengthy penitential canon composed in the seventh century, which is sung during Great Lent. The canon is a dialog between St. Andrew and his soul. The ongoing theme is an urgent exhortation to change one’s life. St Andrew always mentions his own sinfulness placed in juxtaposition to God’s mercy, and uses literally hundreds of references to good and bad examples from the Old and New Testaments to “convince himself” to repent. The St. Demetrius Church Choir will be singing during this service. All are invited to attend.
