St. Demetrius Parish Khram (Patron Saint's Day)
St. Demetrius Parish Khram (Patron Saint's Day)

On Sunday November 5th, St. Demetrius Parish celebrated its 77th Parish Anniversary Khram with an Archpastoral Divine Liturgy and celebratory dinner and program.

His Grace, Bishop Andriy, was greeted by members of parish council Darcia Moskaluk-Rutkay and Ivan Buciora, by youth of the parish, and by Fr. Walter and guest clergy Fr. Yuriy Hnatiw, Fr. Mykolaj Sidorski, Fr. George Gembliuk, and Fr. Deacon Borys Melnyk.  During the Archpastoral Divine Liturgy, the St. Demetrius church choir sang, conducted by Victor Kowalenko.  The Sunday School children also participated by singing “Отче Наш” (the Lord’s Prayer).

After the Archpastoral Divine Liturgy, the parishioners headed down to the hall for the celebratory dinner and program.  The program included greetings from various parish organizations including the St. Demetrius parish president Oksana Balaban, UWAC president Darcia Moskaluk-Rutkay, Order of St. Andrew president Stefan Franko, Seniors of St. Demetrius co-president Olia Slywka, Golf Committee chair George Andruszczenko, as well as greetings from other parishes: Пані Наталя Ємець from the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Volodymyr, and Пан Орест Пісецький from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Andrew.

The attendees were entertained by a variety of performers: singer Vera Zmiyiwsky entertained with a trio of songs “Три поради”, “Мамина сорочка”, and an original song she composed inspired by her grandmother.  Bandura soloist William Kowalenko played “Гомін степів” on the bandura, Victor Kowalenko entertained the audience with a fanfare on the trembita along with a rendition of “Вівці мої вівці”.  The St. Demetrius quartet sang a duo of liturgical choral pieces “Богородице Діво” and “Приідіте возрадуємся Господеві”, the youth group CYMK sang a lively set of Ukrainian folk songs “Зеленеє жито” and “Ой чорна я си чорна”, and the St. Demetrius Bandura Ensemble, under the direction of Ron Demeda, performed “Достойно є” and “Полтавський Марш”.

His Grace, Bishop Andriy, delivered the key address, and Fr. Walter concluded with his final remarks.  After the closing prayer, the entire congregation locked arms and sang “Де згода в родині”.

Thank-you to Team C members who volunteered their time to organize the event.  Thank-you to Ron Demeda for MC’ing and organizing the program.  And thanks to all who attended and helped to make it an enjoyable and memorable day.
